The aim of the project is the examination of painting techniques in the NGI Prodigal Son series, which are medium format works by Murillo, and draw comparisons with technical documentation of large format paintings by Murillo in the collection of the Museo del Prado.
The main achievements of the ARCHLAB visit is the evaluation of the technical process in the Prodigal Son series by Murillo with special interest in the degradation of the blue pigments and how it affects to the current appearance of the series. Additionally, to go more in depth on the uses of ground layers and how these differ in his medium and large format paintings.
