The 2nd edition of “Current Topics in Heritage Science” lecture series will start on October 26th, 2023 !
The “Current Topics in Heritage Science” (CTinHS) lectures are organized by the emerging professionals of HS Academy, a collaborative initiative between IPERION HS (www.iperionhs.eu) and E-RIHS (www.e-rihs.eu). The two European projects integrate facilities of recognized excellence in Heritage Science, offering access to a wide range of high-level scientific instruments, methodologies, data, tools and training opportunities for advancing knowledge and innovation in the field.
The 2nd edition of the “Current Topics in Heritage Science” will start with Lecture 1: Optical Coherence Tomography for examination of artworks, that will be given by Piotr Targowski on Thursday, October 26th, from 4.00 till 5.00 pm (CEST).
Piotr Targowski is a professor of optics at the Institute of Physics, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. His present scientific interests focus on non-invasive examination of artworks, especially with Optical Coherence Tomography, XRF, and XRD techniques. He is the president of the Polish Node of E-RIHS. In his lecture, he will provide a brief introduction to the technique and essentials of the construction of the OCT instruments, also giving an overview of commercially available instruments. The advantages and limitations of the technique will be addressed, and a key to reading tomograms will be provided. Then, using examples from the practice, he will show how the OCT technique may be used to examine the structure of various artworks, trace former conservation attempts, and help monitor some restoration procedures.
