Environmental simulation set of tools

1. Heritage Building Modelling (H-BMI) 3D models of structures for the storage and visualisation of information; 2. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulation of the movement of flows, and the transport of mass, heat and airborne species; 3. HERIe Web-Based Decision-Supporting Tool for Assessing Risk of Physical Damage Using Various Failure Criteria; 4. Collection Demography Prediction of the evolution of the fitness for purpose of a large collection of cellulosic materials as a function of storage conditions; 5. Enclosure simulation consists of mass and energy balances of enclosures (boxes, display cases, painting frames) solved with numerical methods.

Potential Results

1. H-BMI comprises a number of software packages (Rhino, Revit, Forge and custom made solutions) to create 3D models and use them to aggregate, store and visualise existing data such as sensor measurements, condition reports, material properties or simulation results. The 3D models can be re-used in a number of ways, ranging from simple online visualisations to collaborative tools for large teams. 2. CFD comprises a number of software packages (Ansys Fluent, Phoenics and OpenFOAM, as well as custom solutions) for the simulation of the movement of air flows in all types of environments (enclosures, rooms, buildings or large sites). The simulations may involve pollutants, dust, spores, heat and air velocity. 3. HERIe Online software that translates the relative humidity and temperature data recorded in the environment of the analysed object into a strain history experienced by it, and estimates the risk of physical damage using selected failure criteria. As all information is pre-calculated for the user, no engagement in complex and time-consuming numerical simulations is required. concentration of pollutants, indoor or outdoors, during weeks or months, or continuous data of pollution concentrations in a higher frequency (every minute, hour or day). This tool refers to a range of possible instruments and measuring principles, which can be installed in various combinations. Instruments can be hand held or fixed, capture long term data or time series; 4. Collection Demography - users need to input a definition of their collection based on a survey. Ideally, users need to know the distribution of degree of polymerisation and acidity in their paper collection. The model, based on a damage function, can predict the fitness for purpose of the collection under different scenarios of Temperature and Humidity; 5. Enclosure simulation allows users to predict conditions inside enclosures given the conditions outside. A range of models are available for different kinds of enclosures and environmental conditions. These may include: dust deposition, VOC emission, temperature and humidity absorption and buffering... Such models are best used together with empirical measurements obtained with loggers.
